Redondo Beach: District 1 Newsletter for Sept 2, 2025

Redondo Beach
Action & Accountability Update
From the Office of Councilmember Brad Waller, District 1
Happy Labor Day––Appreciation for the everyday work that makes Redondo work—service, care, safety, and transit—seen and unseen.
Neighbors, thanks for another full week. 💪 We broke ground at Wilderness Park and filled the Pier with music at sunset. As always, my focus is on practical fixes, transparent progress, and small steps that add up.
You asked to have my community meeting back on a Saturday morning at Alta Vista. I heard. My next Community Meeting will be Saturday, September 13, from 9:30 to 11am at the Alta Vista Community Center.

Labor Day Weekend Recap
Beachgoers staked their spots early, and the Pier, King Harbor, and Riviera Village stayed lively well into the evening. Many of you went car-free on Beach Cities Transit, opting for bikes and foot along The Strand and Esplanade. LA County lifeguards and RBPD were out in force—thank you for choosing sober rides, minding crosswalks, and packing out what you packed in.
📣 Council & Policy
Cannabis Survey
The City approved commissioning a resident survey to gather opinions on Redondo Beach's Commercial Retail Cannabis regulatory program before deciding whether to open the permit application process.
Smoke Shop Ordinance
Council is refining definitions and operating rules for smoke shops and reviewing tobacco retailer permit requirements; while this work proceeds, the existing moratorium on new smoke shops remains in effect.
Redondo Beach Transportation Corridor Project
Council considered conceptual designs for the Redondo Beach Blvd Active Transportation Project and the North Redondo Bikeway extension to Grant Avenue—with a mobility hub—and to approve a Metro funding agreement to move final design forward. I have opened a dialogue with my counterpart in Torrance to see if we can increase cooperation on the project.
Next Meeting
At our meeting on Tuesday, September 2, Council will be considering the Rules of Conduct and decorum for council and commission meetings and the possible creation of an on-call Police, Fire, and Homeless Services Commission.
🛡️ Public Safety, Youth, Culture & Community
Neighborhoods in action: Robinson Street block party
Thank you to the Robinson Street neighbors for the invitation—great to see the community out, and a warm welcome to a new local business that brought fresh-baked cookies.
Water-main break alert circulated this week
If your home experienced an interruption or cloudy water, run cold taps for a few minutes to clear sediment. Please report any lingering issues or roadway damage via Access Redondo so crews can track and close out tickets.
Wilderness Park Lower Pond: shovels in the ground
Construction is underway following Monday's groundbreaking & interpretive-sign unveiling. Work is slated to wrap in about 3 months.
RBPD handled a "suspicious device" Monday near Ruhland & Voorhees in North Redondo; streets were reopened after the scene cleared, and the device was determined to be inert.
Community Meeting
We had about 20 people show up for the most recent community meeting, which was held last week at the Veterans' Park Senior Center. I got a lot of good feedback from you, and this new, weekly newsletter is one of the ways in which I will be improving my communication with you all.
Summer of Music on the Pier
Thursday, Aug 28, 6–8 pm: Supersonic-LA (Oasis Tribute) performed. The show was free and family-friendly; arriving early helped with parking and sunsets.
