Redondo Beach Newsletter — February 8, 2026
📬 Brad Waller — District 1 Newsletter — February 9, 2026
Neighbors,
Yesterday morning, hundreds of runners hit the streets of Redondo Beach for the 48th annual Super Bowl Sunday 5K/10K — and the energy was incredible. Watching our fire department, police, public works crews, and the Chamber pull that event together year after year is one of those things that reminds you what a well-run city looks like when everyone pitches in.
But this week is packed with substance, too. Tomorrow night's City Council meeting brings the results of the community cannabis survey, a discussion about city-branded apparel with our new logo, and the consent calendar includes pickleball courts coming to Alta Vista Park. I also want to make sure you know about two events this week that are worth your time. Let's get into it.
🏛️ City Council Preview: Tuesday, February 10
🔹 Tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m., the Council takes on several items I know many of you have been following closely. Here's what I'm watching:
→ ⚡ Cannabis Survey Results: Back in December, the Council authorized a public opinion survey on whether to move forward with the City's Commercial Retail Cannabis Regulatory Program and potential permit applications. The polling firm FM3 will present their findings Tuesday night. This has been a years-long conversation in our community, and I want us to have the data before making any decisions. Whatever the results show, I believe we owe it to residents to take them seriously.
→ 🎯 City Logo Apparel: I know this one sounds small, but I've heard from a lot of you asking how to buy gear with the new city logo. Staff will present a report on next steps for a licensing agreement to produce and market City-branded apparel. It's a fun way to show your Redondo Beach pride.
→ 🏓 Pickleball Courts at Alta Vista Park: On the consent calendar is an item to approve resurfacing the tennis courts at Alta Vista Park and converting one court into four dedicated pickleball courts. Here's the smart part: staff found $85,926 in Proposition 68 grant funding to offset costs, so only about 20% of the $107,408 installation will come from the existing Capital Improvement Program account. Good use of grant dollars for a sport that's clearly here to stay.

🏃 Super Bowl Sunday 5K/10K: A Community Tradition
🔹 Congratulations to everyone who ran, walked, cheered, or volunteered at yesterday's 48th annual Super Bowl Sunday 5K/10K. The Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce put on another great event, and I want to thank our Fire Department, Police Department, and Public Works teams for making it all run smoothly — no pun intended.
→ 💡 Why events like this matter: These aren't just races. They're mornings where you see neighbors out on the street together, kids in strollers, and familiar faces from every corner of town. That's community infrastructure, and it's just as important as the physical kind.

💼 Business Preparedness: Rise & Shine Redondo — Thursday, February 12
🔹 If you own or manage a business in Redondo Beach, this Thursday's Rise & Shine Redondo meeting is one you don't want to miss. The North Redondo Beach Business Association (NRBBA) is hosting an "Outsmart Disaster" session from 7:45–9:00 a.m. at the South Bay Galleria Community Room, featuring Susana Ramirez-Munoz from CalOSBA — the California Office of the Small Business Advocate.
→ ⚡ Why this matters now: It's not just earthquakes and fires. Power outages, cybersecurity breaches, supply chain disruptions — any of these can knock a small business offline for days or longer. After what the LA region has experienced recently, having a continuity plan isn't optional. It's essential.
→ 🎯 Bonus workshop (9:15–10:30 a.m.): Stay after the meeting for a hands-on session with Cari Butler of Emergency Cafe to draft your own disaster plan. You'll get a complimentary workbook to customize for your business. RSVP so they can plan the space.
Location: Park on Level 4 of the Galleria Parking Structure, 1815 Hawthorne Blvd. Enter the mall, turn left toward AMC — the Community Room is just past AMC on the left.

This week captures the range of what local government touches — from runners on Catalina Avenue to cannabis policy, from disaster preparedness to pickleball courts. As someone who's spent decades in tech and business, I appreciate that the best decisions come from good data and real community input. Tomorrow night's Council meeting will have both.
Got a question about any of these items? Want to share something for the community meeting on Saturday? Hit reply — I read every message.
See you around the neighborhood.
