Neighbors,
Two meetings in two days, both about the same question: what does the South Bay need to be ready for what is coming? On Thursday, I sat in a room full of regional leaders at the SBCCOG General Assembly talking about how the World Cup, the Super Bowl, and the 2028 Olympics will reshape our communities. On Friday, I worked through housing legislation with the League of California Cities, bill by bill, trying to make sure state mandates leave room for what actually works in cities like ours.
Neither conversation makes a headline on its own. But together, they tell you where the work is right now. Here is the full update, plus a Strategic Planning session tomorrow that will shape the city's priorities and budget heading into next fiscal year.
🏠 Housing & Legislation
🔹 State housing bills reviewed, recommendations sent forward. On Friday, I joined the League of California Cities Housing, Community, and Economic Development Policy Committee to work through sponsored and hot bills, review legislative positions, and watch a presentation on how to implement affordable housing that actually fits with your community and your residents' needs. We reviewed AB 1674, AB 1738, and AB 1914, and we sent recommendations forward on each. The League is sponsoring Assembly Member Muratsuchi's AB 2741, which could help Redondo Beach address some of the zoning challenges we face. These conversations matter because they happen before the bills pass, when cities still have a voice in the outcome.
→ 🎯 My position: The focus needs to be on developers who will own those properties for the long term, and who will work with the community to build projects that serve our residents. Not flip-and-go. Not build-and-disappear.

🌐 Regional Collaboration & Economic Development
🔹 SBCCOG General Assembly: the South Bay's post-2028 vision. Thursday's 26th General Assembly brought together local leaders, regional partners, and policymakers at the Westdrift in Manhattan Beach. I attended and heard Elizabeth Hause say, "We are charged with creating a place for our community," when talking about the vision for the South Bay after the 2028 games conclude. That framing stuck with me. The conversation centered on how our region is evolving from a place known for beaches, arts, and culture into a hub for world-class sports and entertainment, and on balancing that economic opportunity with protecting our environment and quality of life.
→ ⚡ Why this matters here: The FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl LXI, and the 2028 Olympics are not abstract. Decisions being made at the regional level right now will directly affect traffic, transit, business opportunities, and public safety planning in Redondo Beach. I want us at the table early, not catching up later.

🔹 State of the City: completed. Last Tuesday's annual address at the Sonesta Hotel covered where Redondo Beach stands and where we are headed. The themes of revenue growth, infrastructure investment, and leveraging technology for better city services are ones I will keep pushing throughout the year.
🏛️ City Council: Strategic Planning Tomorrow
🔹 Strategic Planning session: tomorrow, Tuesday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. The City Council's Strategic Plan sets the major goals and objectives that guide the city budget, departmental priorities, and performance measures heading into the next fiscal year. Tomorrow's session is part of the regular review cycle, and the outcomes will shape how Redondo Beach allocates resources and sets direction. I take this process seriously because the strategic plan is where priorities become funding decisions. If you want to see how the city sets its course, this is the meeting to watch.

🚨 Public Safety
🔹 Measure FP: Police and Fire RFQs are in, evaluations starting. The requests for qualifications tied to Measure FP funding have been received, and the evaluation process is now underway. This is the stage where the city determines which firms are best qualified to support our public safety infrastructure. Measure FP was a commitment from voters, and I will continue to watch this process closely to make sure it delivers on that commitment.
🌿 Environment & Coastal Care
🔹 King Harbor and Pier Cleanup Day: Sunday, April 19. Grab your neighbors and head to the harbor for a community cleanup. This is the kind of hands-on effort that keeps our waterfront in the shape it deserves. I serve because I believe protecting our coastline is part of the job. If you can give a morning, show up.

🔹 Earth Day at Hopkins Wilderness Park: Saturday, April 18. The South Bay Parkland Conservancy is hosting activity booths, a nature walk, an educational seminar, live music, and a vegan lunch available for purchase. Local environmental groups and community organizations will be running booths throughout the day. Wilderness Park is one of the most special places in our city, and this is exactly the kind of event it was made for.

🏖️ Redondo Roundup
Tomorrow's Strategic Planning session will shape the city's goals and budget priorities for the year ahead. Springfest volunteers are needed, the ARTesia deadline is today, and Earth Day and the harbor cleanup are both less than three weeks out. The regional conversations about what the World Cup, the Olympics, and new housing legislation will mean for our community are not abstract. They are happening now, and Redondo Beach is in the room.
Keep an eye on what comes out of tomorrow's session. I will have more to share next week.
