Redondo Beach Newsletter — November 23, 2025
📬 Brad Waller — District 1 Newsletter — November 24, 2025
This Thanksgiving week, I'm grateful for you, the neighbors who show up to community meetings, send thoughtful emails, and care deeply about what happens in District 1. Your engagement makes me a better representative. It's that simple.
Thursday brings family tables and gratitude lists, but this week also saw something historic happen at Redondo Union High School. And there's an issue many of you have been emailing me about: the King Harbor sign. I want you to know, I'm listening.
Below is where things stand, what's coming next, and how you can weigh in.
🏆 Community Pride
🔹 Sea Hawks make history, championship game Saturday. Redondo Union football is heading to the CIF-SS Division 5 championship for the first time since 1944. Let me say that again: 81 years. The Sea Hawks defeated Loyola 21-7 on Friday, with quarterback Cole Leinart playing through an ankle injury and running back Bo Ausmus scoring twice. They'll host Rio Hondo Prep on Saturday, November 30, at 7 pm at Sea Hawk Bowl.
→ ⚡ Why this matters: These are our kids. Our neighbors' kids. They've worked incredibly hard all season, and now they're writing a new chapter in Redondo Beach history. If you can make it Saturday night, show up and cheer them on.

🏛️ Community Input & Civic Process
🔹 King Harbor sign: your feedback is welcome. You've made your voices heard loud and clear. A few weeks back, the council discussed updating the arching Redondo Beach King Harbor sign — it's due for maintenance either way, same cost regardless of graphics or font. We made some initial choices on the center graphic and font that generated significant community interest.
→ 💡 What happens next: This is coming back to the council, likely December 9th, for further discussion and public input. I welcome your feedback. Based on what I've heard from constituents, I'd support returning to the original font. I still think the trademarked city logo makes sense for the center graphic, but I'm eager to hear more perspectives when this comes back.
→ ⚡ Why this matters: Signs are symbols, and symbols matter to people who love their town. This is exactly the kind of issue where community input should drive the decision.

📅 Thanksgiving Week Reminder
🔹 Trash collection is delayed Thursday. Athens Services will not collect trash on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 28). If Thursday is your regular collection day, your pickup moves to Friday. Everyone else in the week shifts one day later. Place your carts on the curb, not in the street, especially on street sweeping days during holiday weeks.

📅 Looking Ahead
🔹 Riviera Village Holiday Stroll — Thursday, Dec 4, 5-9 pm Kick off the season with shopping, dining, Santa, the Grinch, and festive photo ops along Catalina Avenue. Streets close to cars; stores stay open late with refreshments. Great way to support local businesses and get into the holiday spirit.
🔹 Holiday Music & Tree Lighting — Tuesday, Dec 9 @ 4:30 pm. A city tradition with student performers (RUHS Jazz Band and choirs) and community partners, hosted by Vera Jimenez. Celebrate at the Civic Center as we light the tree and kick off the season.
🔹 Next City Council meeting — Tuesday, Dec 2 @ 6:00 pm. The calendar updates as agendas are posted. December meetings typically include year-end business and budget discussions.
🌊 Environment & Coastal Access
🔹 South Bay Parkland Conservancy (SBPC) — Ongoing restoration across the bluffs and Wilderness Park — great way to connect with local naturalists and neighbors.
🥕 Weekly Markets
🔹 Farmers' Market by the Pier (Veterans Park) — Thursdays, 8 am–1 pm. 309 Esplanade.
🔹 Riviera Village Farmers Market — Sundays, 8:30 am–1 pm. Triangle Lot, 1801 S. Elena Ave.
