Redondo Beach Newsletter — November 30, 2025
📬 Brad Waller — District 1 Newsletter — December 1, 2025
Hello everyone,
I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving filled with plenty of good food, great friends and family, and an extra helping of gratitude.
Three big community events hit this week, and Tuesday's Council agenda tackles everything from playground design to how we'll move forward with new fire and police facilities. If you're planning your December calendar, keep reading; there's a lot happening.
Below is what's on deck, why it matters, and where you can plug in.
🏛️ City Council & Community Input
🔹 Tuesday's agenda covers major projects and transparency updates. The December 2 Council meeting includes four key items: the playground redesign at Franklin Park, the annual Tourism Board report, next steps on Measure FP, including our agreement with Griffin Structures, and a decision on where the city will post legal notices. That last one sounds dry, but it is really about making sure residents can find public notices in accessible spots around town. That is transparency in action.
→ 💡 What this means: These aren’t routine items. Franklin Park is a neighborhood asset used by families across Redondo Beach, and we want to get the renovation right. Measure FP is a $93 million investment to replace both fire stations and the police station, and choosing the right delivery method now will shape what ultimately gets built. I’m looking forward to hearing public input on all of these, particularly the playground design. Parents know what works, and your feedback matters.

💬 How City Council Actually Works
🔹 Clearing up some myths about council budgets and staff. At my last community meeting, someone asked about my budget and my staff. Here's the reality: Redondo Beach councilmembers have no operating budget. When I host community meetings, the coffee and snacks come out of my own pocket. I do get reimbursed for business travel to conferences, but local constituent work? That's on me, and I’m happy to do it too because I love my city.
→ 💡 About staffing: The entire Council, Mayor, and City Manager share one executive assistant who primarily supports City Manager Mike Witzansky but also helps with our calendars. When you get this newsletter, you’re seeing something I helped create with a service I pay for called MyGovTools to help me draft it and also send it out.
→ ⚡ Why this matters: I want you to know what you're getting is direct communication from your councilmember, not filtered through staff or consultants. It also means if something takes me a bit longer to respond to, it's because I'm one person juggling a part-time elected role with my day job and the rest of life, just like many of you.

🏆 Community Pride
🔹 Sea Hawks fought hard in the championship game. Last Friday night, Redondo Union took on Rio Hondo Prep in the CIF-SS Division 5 finals at Sea Hawk Stadium. It was playoff football at its best. Our kids left everything on the field. Win or lose, making it to the championship for the first time in 81 years is something this community won't forget. I'm proud of every player, coach, and family member who showed up and supported our team.
→ ⚡ Why this matters: These are our kids. Watching them compete at this level reminds me why investing in our schools, fields, and youth programs pays dividends far beyond scoreboards.
📅 This Week's Community Events
🔹 Riviera Village Holiday Stroll — Thursday, Dec 4, 5-9 pm. Catalina Avenue closes to cars for the evening. Stores stay open late with refreshments, Santa and the Grinch make appearances, and there are photo ops everywhere. It's the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season in South Redondo, and it's a great chance to support the small businesses that make the Village what it is.
🔹 Keep the Esplanade Beautiful monthly sweep — Saturday, Dec 6 @ 9 am. Meet at Esplanade and Avenue I. KEB provides gloves, bags, and grabbers; you just show up. It's an hour of your time, and it makes a visible difference along our coastline. I've joined these sweeps before; it's good neighbors doing simple, effective work.
→ 💡 My take: Small acts compound. An hour on a Saturday morning keeps our beaches clean and connects you with people who care about the same stretch of coast you do.

🔹 RBPD's "Let It Snow" — Saturday, Dec 6, noon-4 pm @ Seaside Lagoon. The Police Department brings in real snow for sledding, snowball throwing, photos with Santa, crafts, and hot chocolate. It's free (donations encouraged for the Domestic Violence Victim Advocacy Program toy drive). Last year drew thousands. It's become a December tradition for South Bay families.
→ ⚡ Why I'm highlighting this: Public safety isn't just patrols and response times. Events like this build trust between residents and RBPD, and they give families a reason to gather. Plus, snow at the beach is just fun!
🌊 Environment & Coastal Access
🔹 South Bay Parkland Conservancy (SBPC) — Ongoing restoration across the bluffs and Wilderness Park — great way to connect with local naturalists and neighbors.
