Mayor Lana Negrete Santa Monica Action & Accountability Update
Hello Santa Monica,
Hope you're all having a great week. When I ran for office, I made clear commitments to prioritize public safety, tackle homelessness, and drive economic recovery—and you, the voters, gave me your trust to lead on these issues.
We had another meaningful week of action to advance those priorities and ensure that the progress we promised becomes the progress you see. These aren't just agenda items—they' re the values we share and the future we're building together.
I want to meet you (and hear you !). Join me for coffee and conversation on Tuesday,
April 8th at Starbucks (Olympic & Main) from 2:30–4 PM to connect and share.
Joined the LA County Board of Supervisors meeting to track and speak out on the Measure A funding formula—this quarter-cent sales tax directly impacts Santa Monica's access to critical parks and recreation dollars. I' m continuing to push for an equitable share of resources. Here are the county's allocations for this measure.
Safety on PCH
Engaged directly with FEMA officials to follow up on our request for a long-term resilience plan for Pacific Coast Highway. This critical route affects both safety and the economic vitality of our coastal businesses. I'm holding federal partners accountable to deliver.
Championing the Creative Economy
Joined SNAP and Otis College of Art and Design for an eye-opening event on the creative economy's power in Los Angeles. We discussed how this sector drives jobs, innovation, and vibrancy in Santa Monica' s business ecosystem.
Protecting Our Beaches
Met with environmental health organizations conducting water and sand testing at our beaches—essential for public health and for preserving Santa Monica's standing as a global tourism destination. Clean beaches aren' t just a luxury—they're an economic and environmental necessity.
New SAMO Bridge Trailers Offer Temporary Shelter & Support
Two new trailers at Santa Monica's Civic Center are now part of a pilot program to temporarily house unhoused individuals brought in by the Santa Monica Police Department. Open 24/7 and monitored with round-the-clock security and surveillance, the program offers up to three days of support and service connection. Funded through a Prop 47 grant, this initiative—led by SMPD and the City Attorney' s Office—will run for three years as a mobile,
scalable solution prioritizing rehabilitation over incarceration. Learn more here.
State Level Advocacy
I'm proud to support AB 478, the \"Oreo Bill\" by Assemblymember Rick Zbur. This legislation cuts red tape for animal rescue agencies during emergencies—because no one should have to choose between saving lives and navigating bureaucracy during a disaster.
Looking Ahead: Taking Action in April
At our next City Council meeting on Tuesday,
April 8,
I'll be introducing several initiatives with support from Councilmember Zwick:
Beach Safety and Crime Reduction:Proposing a nighttime beach curfew to reduce crime and enhance public safety while ensuring responsible access to public space.
Justice System Transparency:Launching a new City Attorney's Office dashboard to track prosecutions and outcomes—bringing greater accountability to our local justice system.
Workforce Modernization:Reviewing the city's work-from-home policy to ensure we' re balancing operational efficiency with employee wellness and public service.
Thank you for staying engaged. Your voices guide my work every day as we build a stronger,
safer,
and more equitable Santa Monica—together.
