Mayor Lana Negrete Newsletter - August 10, 2025
![]() City of Santa MonicaAction & Accountability UpdateDear Neighbors, Thank you for showing up for one another this week. From Main Street to Virginia Avenue Park, your engagement keeps Santa Monica safe, welcoming, and connected. Thank you for your passion, your questions, and your commitment to Santa Monica. As always, stay informed with Santa Monica news and civic events you can participate in, and have your voice heard: 📅 Highlights from August 04 - 10:🔷 Public Safety and Pier Updates🔷 National Night Out on Main Street 🔷 Safe & Clean + Pier coordination 1. Pier Bridge replacement: The $29 million construction contract is slated for September award, with construction targeted to begin in 2026. 2. Night beach closures: My push to close beaches at night for safety has gained traction; the Coastal Commission has acknowledged the public-safety concerns and we're moving in the right direction. 3. Pier Substation visibility: We're working to increase police presence at and around the substation to deter crime and improve response. 4. 2026 music event: We're in early talks to bring a major festival-style concert to the Pier in 2026 and grow it into an iconic annual community tradition. 🎉 Community, Small Business, and City Spirit🎉 Chez Jay Turns 66 💪 DMN8 Day Community Fitness 🌱 Markets, Families, and Resources🌱 National Farmers Market Week At the Downtown Santa Monica Market on Third Street Promenade (Wednesday, 8:30 AM–1 PM), familiar faces mixed with first-time visitors as chefs, families, and neighbors browsed seasonal produce, artisanal goods, and fresh flowers. At Virginia Avenue Park (Saturday, 8:30 AM–1 PM), the market took on a distinctly neighborhood feel, with children enjoying free backpacks, hands-on activities, and rock climbing, while parents connected with resource providers like the Community Resource Center LA. The mix of local farmers, small businesses, and community services turned the market into more than a shopping trip—it became a hub for connection, wellness, and mutual support. Thank you for showing up to sustain the growers, makers, and service providers who invest in Santa Monica week after week. Each purchase and conversation strengthens the economic and social fabric of our city. 🛡️ How to Plug In🛡️ Public safety feedback: Share what you're seeing around the Pier, the Promenade, and neighborhood corridors so we can target enforcement and services where they're most needed. 🫶 Support local: Visit legacy spots like Chez Jay and shop our markets; every purchase helps workers and keeps dollars in Santa Monica. 💪 Economic Strength UpdateAccording to this recent update from GovTools, our economy is showing impressive strength. Key economic indicators: 🟢 Unemployment down to 5.6%: Showing strong job market recovery. 🟢 Strong tourism rebound: Visitors are returning to Santa Monica. 🟢 Over $1B in planned investments: The city is on a positive economic track. ![]() 🔮 Looking Ahead:📅 City Council Meeting Tomorrow at 5:30 PM. Come have your voice heard! 📋 Important Note: I will be pulling Item 4L from the agenda, as I believe we need to ask why we are rushing into developer-friendly, non-affordable housing policies. My concern is that RHNA is intended to address affordable housing needs, not create more market-rate units—and if we're not careful, we could find ourselves in a "builder's remedy" situation. 🎯 Our Commitment: We will keep centering safety on the Pier and beaches, investing in critical infrastructure like the Pier Bridge, and creating programming that brings us together. I am here to listen and to ensure your perspective is represented. Please continue to reach out and share your ideas. A heartfelt thank you to our first responders, public servants, and each of you who help keep our city thriving. I'm proud to serve you—and so grateful for the journey we're on together. ![]() Thank you, as always, for being engaged, thoughtful, and passionate about the future of Santa Monica.
