More informationInside Oakland
Date: 2026-04-30T08:45:00-07:00
Description: On April 30th, Inside Oakland is going somewhere you've probably never been before. It's heading inside Fire Station 1, home of Oakland's Emergency Operations Center, for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the nerve center that keeps our city safe. And we're sitting down with the man who runs it all: Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington. Chief Covington is Oakland through and through. A Bishop O'Dowd grad. A man who heard a calling in his early 20s and answered it, joining the Oakland Fire Department as a firefighter-paramedic over 26 years ago. Since then, he's held virtually every rank in the department, from engineer to battalion chief to deputy chief, before being appointed permanent Fire Chief in October 2023. The Oakland Fire Department covers the city with 500 uniformed personnel across three shifts, and responds to roughly 96,000 emergency calls each year; more than 80% of which are medical emergencies. Chief Covington oversees it all, and now he's ready to talk frankly about what it means for your business, your nonprofit, and your neighborhood.

More informationIRSG Network Strategy Session – May 6
Date: 2026-05-06T13:00:00-05:00
Description: This year, we at IRSG are adapting in an effort to meet the moment—together. Our community gatherings will continue to support learning and peer exchange with the goals of: Making more space - The IRSG Network Strategy Sessions will be a space to connect, learn, share, and coordinate. Our third IRSG Network Strategy Discussion will pick up up the threads of the second conversation held March 25th on how funders are resourcing rural communities to build power. We’ll gather on Zoom on Wednesday, May 6 from 1:00 - 2:30 pm ET. This year we want to move in ways that meet the energy, time, and needs we all have. We will explore what we can do if we make space, let go of “this is how we do it” ways of planning, and reach for what we need to realize our commitments. Taking collective action - We are working toward shaping a campaign for *our* collective action this year, designed to present a roadmap of the rural organizing ecosystem and offer places for philanthropy of all types to plug in. Conversations and coordination together will help us shape our campaign plans and goals. Growing our group - We are ready to deepen with you, grow our web of networked partners, and expand our community this year. We aim to gather your input about who else should join IRSG and how this group can continue to serve your needs and goals. We invite you and any funder colleagues interested in deepening their capacity to resource rural power to join us!

Exploring New Developments in Unionization within the Social Justice Sector
Date: 2026-06-23T11:00:00-07:00
Description: Join Neighborhood Funders Group, Beyond Neutrality, the Ford Foundation, and the Amalgamated Foundation for an online briefing for funders to learn more about the current trends in unionization in the nonprofit social justice sector. In the current political and economic climate, it is vital that we work together toward a thriving multiracial democracy. At the same time, nonprofit staff face growing uncertainty and continue to unionize for greater power and voice on the job. This duality is a fast-moving and critical dynamic for funders to understand and to consider their role among grantees and partners. During the briefing, we will share lessons about the current landscape of unionization in the social justice sector and the role funders can play in supporting outcomes that are mission-driven, pro-union, and anti-racist.
