During her postulancy, she is given the task to become the new governess to the seven von Trapp children: Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, and little Gretl. Although their father, Captain Georg von Trapp, is a stoic man who does not allow music in his home, Maria brings a new liveliness and joy into the von Trapp family's life, a joy that had not been there for many years. Amidst their rediscovery of music and familial love, the von Trapps face real-world heartache as Nazism begins to take hold of Austria, their beloved home country.
