The National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse (NCAPDA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer-based organization established to prevent prescription drug/opioid-related Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and overdose deaths through community education, policy change, and legislative action at the local, state and federal levels. Months following the tragic death of their youngest son, Joseph (Joey) John Rover III, April Rovero and Joseph Rovero founded NCAPDA in June 2010. Joey passed away from a lethal combination of alcohol and prescription drugs that a doctor had prescribed just nine days before his death. Joey’s life was cut short on December 18, 2009, just five months before he would have graduated from Arizona State University with degrees in Business and Communications.

American Heart Association PALS Courses: Advanced Pediatric Emergency Training The American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course is a comprehensive training program designed for healthcare professionals who respond to pediatric emergencies. Tailored specifically for the unique needs of infants and children, the PALS course builds on the foundation of Basic Life Support (BLS) and emphasizes the advanced skills required to manage seriously ill pediatric patients in both prehospital and hospital settings. Who Should Take PALS? PALS certification is recommended for a range of healthcare providers, including pediatricians, emergency room physicians, paramedics, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other clinicians who care for infants and children. The course is especially important for those working in emergency departments, intensive care units, and pediatric clinics. What the Course Covers The PALS course prepares participants to recognize and manage a wide range of pediatric emergencies, including respiratory distress, shock, and cardiac arrest. Core components of the course include: Systematic pediatric assessment Effective airway management and oxygen delivery Recognition and management of respiratory failure and shock Cardiac rhythm identification and treatment Use of advanced pharmacology in pediatric emergencies Team dynamics and communication during resuscitation scenarios Through a combination of lectures, video presentations, and hands-on simulation exercises, students gain the knowledge and confidence to take fast, decisive action in high-stakes situations. Course Format and Duration The AHA offers PALS training in both traditional classroom settings and blended learning formats. In the blended model, students complete online coursework at their convenience, followed by an in-person skills session led by a certified instructor. The full course typically takes 10 to 12 hours, while renewal courses may be completed in approximately 6 to 8 hours. Certification Details Participants who successfully complete the course and skills testing receive an official AHA PALS Provider eCard, valid for two years. Recertification is required biennially and is essential for maintaining proficiency in pediatric emergency care.
